(OECS Secretariat, Castries, St Lucia) The OECS Protected Areas and Associated Livelihoods (OPAAL) project is expected to make progress towards the development of a regional awareness strategy for protected areas next week, when it holds a regional stakeholder consultation at the St Kitts Marriot in Frigate Bay.

The main purpose of the consultation is to gather input from Member States and at the same time arrive at consensus on the awareness strategy for protected areas in the OECS. As part of the consultation, participants will also benefit from a series of case study presentations from the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), RARE Radio, the Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA), the Caribbean Renewable Energy Programme (CREP), the Tourism sector and the Mass Media.
An estimated 40 participants are expected from across the OECS, comprising senior environmental officers from government and non-government agencies, environmental educators and communications experts. These persons will be involved in formulating elements of their country action plans that will ultimately fit into the regional awareness strategy.
The consultation will be significantly informed by the Knowledge Attitude and Practice (KAP) Study, conducted in 2007 that assessed levels of environmental awareness in the six (6) independent states of the OECS. Findings and recommendations in the KAP Study will form a major part of the discussions during the consultation.
Following this consultation, the awareness strategy will be drafted by a consultant, who has been hired under the OPAAL project. The consultant is expected to be guided by the findings and recommendations in the KAP Study as well as inputs of stakeholders emerging from this workshop.
